How to register your business?

  1. Register your business name: If you choose to name your business other than your own name, then DBA – doing business as may be the easiest way to register with the state. While the pricing may vary by state, most states provide this service under $50.
  2. Register your business as a legal entity: There are two basic legal structures- LLCs and INC. Your LLC may elect to be taxed as a C or S Corporation. Without any special election, single-member LLCs are sole proprietorships and multi-member LLCs are partnerships.
  3. Register your business with Internal revenue service and local Comptroller office: Internal revenue service provides free Employer Identification Service (EIN). The local comptroller office in most cases will send you a franchise tax or gross receipts tax ID # that identifies your business with the state for local taxes. Check with a tax professional as the rules vary by state for local/state taxation.
