How to report name changes before filing taxes?

Has your legal name changed? Name on your tax return should exactly match the name on the social security administration website. Mismatch in names can delay tax refunds.

Here’s what you should do if your legal name has changed :

 

Reporting your name change

  1. Notify SSA of the following types of name changes :
    • Divorced taxpayers who are now using a former last name.
    • Married taxpayers who are now using a hyphenated name.
    • Married taxpayers and are now using spouse’s last name.

 

2.Dependent’s name change

    • Notify SSA if the dependent’s name has changed.
    • Notify if your adopted child has a new last name.
    • If the adopted child does not have a social security number, you can use a temporary  Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number on the tax return. You can apply for a ATIN by filing a Form W-7A.

After it has been updated on the SSA system, then you can include the new name on your tax returns.

  • Getting a New Social Security Card. You can  File Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. You can get the form on SSA.gov or by calling 800-772-1213.

  1. Enter social security number or IRS Taxpayer identification number on your tax return.
  2. Select the filing status as shown on your tax returns.
